Kinski to Japanese shoegaze to Austin and the UK to Christian Death and Haress
Oscars happening currently. Not watching. Can’t recall the last time I watched them. It feels less and less inviting, more and more distant each year.
Currently listening to Kinski.
Formed in 1998, and still going, they feel like a real workhorse band. Constantly putting out top rate material and just going for it all the time. Walls of noisey, skronky guitar mixed with some quieter moments. Perhaps Americas answer to Mogwai. Amazing stuff.
The Youtube algorithm brought me to this one next
Classic sounding shoegaze from Japan. Broken Little Sister formed in 2005, put out one album and a few EPs (avoid the Beatles covers one. It sounds dreadful)
I had never heard this band before. Primordial Undermind. Loved it as soon as I heard (what sounded like) horns (alto saxophone?) It’s not something that usually goes along with this style of meandering (not a bad thing, as long as they find their way back) psychedelic, improv style of music but it’s great here.
I went to bed right after this.
Started the next day off with Primordial Undermind again and then onto the new Shit and Shine (it’s how they came up on my music player).
Lovely electronic dirge. At times reminding me of a monks chant through a vocoder. This song is a particular favourite. Started in 2004 and coming from the fertile Austin music scene. Craig Clouse (basically he is Shit and Shine) is also a member of USA/Mexico.
Here’s some USA/Mexico. It’s a cover of a song from another amazing Austin band, Cherubs. I’ll get around to them too at some point, I’m sure.
Next came up some tracks from Warm Graves.
The band comes from Germany and is on one of my favourite record labels, Fuzz Club. Synth heavy sound. Lots of warm pads, deep gutteral bass and arppegios. Very clean sounding darker new wave.
Ran a few errands with the music going, got home and checked out what the Youtube algorithm had for me. First watched a bit of this Christian Death concert
Then came across my find of the day.
I had never heard of this band before. Absolutely astounding. Haress is a six or seven piece from the UK. Listening to it brings to mind bands like 75 Dollar Bill and dEUS and UK folk music. A building sound with layers of tension within it. If I had found this band in 2019 (when this record came out) I would have worn out my copy. Just gorgeous. This particular song is from there forthcoming record, ‘Ghosts’, which comes out May 13/22.
If we like the same music, we’re already friends. Stay safe.
